The Chief Executive Officer of TAF Africa and founder of the Albino Foundation, Jake Epelle, has cautioned that appointing former INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu as an ambassador could adversely affect Nigeria’s diplomatic relations, particularly with Western nations.

Epelle cautioned that assigning Mahmood to countries such as the United States would be “a disaster,” asserting that some Western nations perceive him as unsupportive of democratic processes.

During an interview on Channels Television on Monday, Epelle noted that African nations might be more accepting of the appointment.

He explained that sending an envoy with what he termed “political baggage” could hinder Nigeria’s interactions with host countries, as such envoys might be excluded from crucial meetings or information exchanges.

Epelle expressed uncertainty about who advised President Bola Tinubu to nominate Mahmood, whom he acknowledged as a personal friend.

He voiced concern that the President may not have received appropriate guidance, suggesting that the decision demonstrated a lack of consideration for public sentiment.

Epelle remarked that he had anticipated Mahmood would transition to an academic career or private endeavors, indicating that the nomination was unexpected.

He stated: “Political appointments, in general, resemble a political chess game. They disregard federal character. They overlook the perceptions of the populace. They show no regard for public opinion.

“Keep in mind that these appointments are made by a select few, a small group of individuals close to the President, who will advise him on whom to appoint. In this context, I am unsure who advised the President about Mahmood, who, I don’t deny, is a good friend of mine.

“I believed that the professor should have been enjoying his time, perhaps at his country home or returning to the university to teach. I had no inkling that he was still interested in a political position, but that’s his choice. This is one appointment that I take with skepticism.

“I don’t think the President was adequately advised, but it seems to reflect an attitude of indifference. Everyone serves at my discretion, and that’s the President's prerogative. However, when making such appointments, it’s essential to gauge the sentiments of the nation. One must grasp the complexities of diplomacy, fully aware that any country receiving someone with political baggage will treat that person with caution. Certain information will be withheld from them, and they may not be invited to key meetings. This is a reality.

“For example, if Mahmood were to be placed in the US, it would be disastrous for us, as they already perceive him as unfriendly towards democracy. I’m not aware of any Western countries that would find this acceptable; perhaps some African countries may tolerate it, but he is not the right nominee considering the current global context.”
