The Interim leadership of the Labour Party (LP), led by Nenadi Usman, has expressed its support for the defection of the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

This announcement was made in a statement by Usman’s Special Adviser (Media), Ken Asogwa, late Wednesday in Abuja.

In the statement, Usman emphasized that Obi had the party’s backing to engage in coalition discussions from the outset.

She recalled that on May 26, 2025, the Labour Party granted its full endorsement for Obi to join the ADC coalition.

She added that the Labour Party has not retracted its initial support for Obi following the formalization of his transition to the ADC.

According to her, while the Labour Party leadership remains committed to reclaiming the party from established interests intent on establishing a one-party system, it reassures members nationwide that there is no reason for concern.

“We fully support Peter Obi as he transitions to the ADC. Following Mr. Obi’s expected departure, all statutory bodies of the Labour Party will convene to establish a new and sustainable direction for the party.

“We are confident that the party’s fortunes will be revitalized shortly.
“Even as the party diligently works to address the gap created by the recent wave of defections, we assure our members that the Labour Party will emerge stronger, better organized, and more focused.

“The ongoing membership revalidation and registration initiative aims to inject new energy into the party, and we are pleased to report that the initiative is already producing positive outcomes,” she stated.
