The fire was reportedly caused by a gas cylinder explosion and has since been put out, according to the Press Trust of India, citing local police.
Goa’s Chief Minister Pramod Sawant stated that most of the victims were kitchen staff at the club, although approximately three to four tourists are believed to be among those who perished.
Six individuals sustained injuries and are currently in stable condition, he added.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as deeply distressing and mentioned that he had a conversation with Sawant regarding the situation.
He noted that the state government is extending all possible support to those affected and expressed condolences to the families of the victims.
Reports indicate that the nightclub had a narrow entrance and exit, which required fire brigades to position their tankers about 400 meters away.
This limited access is believed to have hindered firefighting efforts.
Local village council official Roshan Redkar revealed that authorities had previously issued a demolition notice for the club due to its lack of a construction permit from the government.
However, higher officials later rescinded that order, he stated.
The state government has initiated an inquiry into the incident to ascertain the precise cause of the fire and whether fire safety regulations and building codes were adhered to, according to Sawant.
Goa attracts millions of tourists annually with its vibrant nightlife, beautiful beaches, and relaxed coastal ambiance.
