As one of the buses swerved across the road in an attempt to avoid a crash, it collided with the other bus, which was also filled with passengers at the time.
The accident initiated a "chain reaction," leaving both buses wrecked on the highway as other vehicles overturned while trying to navigate around the destruction.
Numerous injured individuals were discovered by the roadside when emergency services arrived at the scene in Kitaleba village.
Authorities express concern that the casualty count may rise due to the severity of some injuries.
