Aaron Cresswell put in a cross that was attacked by Kurt Zouma at the front post only for De Gea to make an outstanding save at full stretch to keep it out.

The TV cameras panned to show Moyes in disbelief and he appeared to mutter under his breathe: “What a f***ing save.”

De Gea went on to make another crucial stop soon after when West Ham captain Declan Rice’s long range strike was seemingly heading in only for the Spanish keeper to tip it around the post.

The 31-year-old was congratulated by his teammates on both occasions as they ran towards him to say their thanks as United held on for a huge three points.

De Gea made four saves in the game and it was his eighth clean sheet in all competitions this season.

His manager Erik ten Hag praised his performance calling him “great” and “magnificent”.

West Ham star Cresswell was also complimentary about De Gea: “He made some unbelievable saves. On another day [those shots] go in.

“He has made three or four great saves. We have just spoken inside the dressing room – it feels like the worst-case scenario because we should have got something.”

De Gea’s match winning performance comes in response to being left out of Spain’s 55-man provisional squad for the World Cup.

He may have 45 caps on the international stage but manager Luis Enrique selected Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga, Brentford stopper David Raya and Brighton star Robert Sanchez.

There was a also a place for Athletic Bilbao keeper Unai Simon who is expected to be the No.1 for Spain in Qatar.
