DARTH Vader’s iconic “I am your father” reveal has been crowned the most epic movie moment of the last 50 years.

The plot twist from claimed the top spot, narrowly beating Jack’s “I’m king of the world!” moment in , according to a poll of 2,000 film fans.

Rounding out the top five were ’s graphic chest-bursting scene, the harrowing Normandy beach landing in and the T-Rex escape in .

Also making the list were the memorable clock tower lightning strike in , the iconic speech for freedom in Braveheart and the rain-soaked escape from .

A spokesperson for , which commissioned the research to mark the launch of its premium large-screen format, EPIC, said: “These moments show the incredible range of experiences the big screen can create.

“It’s amazing to see how many iconic film scenes there have been over the past 50 years and be able to pinpoint the ones that have been most impactful.

“Whether it’s agonising suspense, an emotional love story or the type that makes you laugh so much it hurts, these stories are best experienced on the big screen.”

The study also found when it comes to the music, has left a lasting impression, with 22 per cent voting it as the most epic movie soundtrack.

Star Wars and shared second place in the running – both by 18 per cent as films with the best supporting audio.

And when it comes to one-liners, “I’ll be back” from the first Terminator film was the favourite of the film fans polled.

This was followed by Clint Eastwood’s “Go ahead, make my day” in Sudden Impact and Tom Hank’s “Life is like a box of chocolates” from Forrest Gump.

Carried out via OnePoll, the research found a third of film fans would watch a re-release of a monumental film at the cinema and 36 per cent are driven by nostalgia to do so.

For 35 per cent of these, it’s the opportunity to watch a classic motion picture in high definition, but 32 per cent added it’s all about reliving impactful scenes.

It also emerged half of those polled believe acting is the most important ingredient for making a significant film segment.

While 49 per cent think a motion picture is epic if it makes an impression on them after it has ended.

And despite the rise in online streaming, 51 per cent prefer to see screenings in the movie house when they first come out.

The spokesperson from Vue added: “Over the past 50 years, there have been plenty of changes in the way that we make, review and watch movies.

“What remains constant is the desire to experience great films in a way that feels special, while we continue to innovate and make sure these moments can be experienced as fully and immersively as possible.

“This is why we’ve introduced EPIC at some of our biggest screens, to let our visitors experience amazing moments like these, and the many still to come with some of the most breathtaking visuals and immersive sounds possible.”
