The President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria, PETROAN, Billy Gillis-Harry, has said it is necessary for petrol tanker drivers to belong to a union to ensure regulation and discipline in the sector.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise programme on Monday, Gillis-Harry argued that without union membership, tanker drivers and operators could act without accountability, leading to inefficiency and loss for consumers.
DAILY POST reported that members of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, with effect from today, Monday, September 8, over a face-off with Dangote Refinery.
The National President of NUPENG, Williams Akporeha, in an interview with DAILY POST on Sunday, noted that the move was in the interest of the country.

Meanwhile, PETROAN President said everyone should not be left to do what they want.
He said, “If every retailer is just doing what they want, you could go to a station, pay for N2,000 worth of petrol and get only N800. There will be no sanctions because there is no regulation.”
The PETROAN president noted that while his association is committed to supporting the Dangote refinery to succeed, proper coordination among stakeholders is vital to ensure Nigerians get value.
According to him, unions like the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, and the Petroleum Tanker Drivers, PTD, branch play an important role in maintaining order in the industry.
“Tanker drivers cannot just operate anyhow they want. Sometimes, products may not be delivered for days or tankers may not pass, but NUPENG and PTD are doing a great job in ensuring such issues are properly managed,” he added.
