A SPANISH professional cyclist has been rushed to a hospital intensive care unit after smashing into a car during a training session.
Jaume Guardeno, 23, is understood to have lost his balance after hitting a stone on the road before the collision with the oncoming vehicle.

The athlete, who rides for the Caja Rural-Seguros RGA team, was taken to Park Tauli University Hospital in Sabadell following Tuesday’s accident.
A team spokesman said in a statement: “Our team-mate Jaume Guardeno suffered a fall on Tuesday while training, following his recent participation in the , being involved in a collision with a vehicle and sustaining serious injuries.
“As a result of the accident, the Alicante-born cyclist residing in Caldes de Montbui was urgently airlifted by helicopter to Tauli Hospital in Sabadell, where he remains in its intensive care unit with serious injuries and awaiting further progress.
“We want to send all our support and strength to Jaume and his family at this time, wishing him a speedy and full recovery.
“We will provide updates as his condition evolves.”
The cyclist is said to have been taken to hospital by air ambulance after reportedly suffering a serious head injury.
Guardeno was involved in Volta a Catalunya, which is one of three World Tour stage races in Spain and finished on Sunday.
He has also taken part in , where he came 14th overall in last year’s race, and the Tour of Portugal.
He was expected to take part in the later this year.
