A MAJOR motorway has ground to a halt causing chaos for a nearby busy airport after a “serious” crash.

The M11 southbound was brought to a standstill this morning after a vehicle overturned between junction seven for Harlow and junction six, M25 interchange.

Emergency services raced to the scene just before 1am and the lanes have now reopened but there are still delays for travellers heading to Stansted Airport.

National Highways urged motorists to “plan ahead” as it expects delays of more than an hour.

A spokesperson said: “The M11 in is closed southbound between J7 (Harlow) and J6 (M25 Interchange) following a serious collision which occurred at 12.50am this morning.

“The collision involves a vehicle which has overturned and has come to rest on its roof on the verge adjacent to the carriageway.

“Emergency services are in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers are also in attendance assisting with traffic management.

“Plans are being made to release traffic caught within the closure. “
