The Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has rejected claims made by United States President Donald Trump that Nigeria persecutes Christians.

NIDCOM Chairperson Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in a post on her verified X account on Monday, characterized this perception as inaccurate and unjust.

Dabiri-Erewa urged Trump to support the Bola Tinubu administration's efforts to eliminate terrorists responsible for the deaths of innocent civilians.

The former lawmaker noted that both President Tinubu and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have already addressed the US designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” regarding alleged religious persecution.

She stated, “This perception is definitely not true. There are challenges posed by malevolent terrorists in certain regions of the country, without a doubt. What Trump should do is back our government's efforts to eradicate them, rather than unfairly tarnish our nation's reputation.”

She emphasized that Nigeria, under Tinubu's leadership, remains committed to upholding democracy, religious freedom, and the constitutional rights that protect individuals of all faiths. She called on Nigerians worldwide to stay united in fostering a nation “built on unity, tolerance, and mutual respect.”

Her comments came in response to Trump's posts on his Truth Social platform last Friday and Saturday, where he asserted that Christians are being targeted in Nigeria and cautioned that the US might “intervene forcefully” if the violence persists.

“If the Nigerian Government continues to permit the killing of Christians, the USA will immediately cease all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well intervene in that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’” Trump had stated.
