Former Foreign Affairs Minister, Bolaji Akinyemi, has said Nigeria may need to rethink the type of democracy it practices, warning that copying foreign political systems might be doing more harm than good.
Speaking on Arise News, Akinyemi noted that “Nigeria adopted a democratic model from other countries without fully adjusting it to fit its own culture and realities”.
According to him, this has created challenges on how the country is governed.
He also pointed out that too much focus on party politics is affecting national progress as instead of working together to solve problems, politicians are often busy fighting for party interests, which slows down development.
Akinyemi urged leaders to put Nigeria interest first above political parties and personal ambitions. He said the country needs a system that truly reflects its people and promotes unity, stability, and growth.
His comments have sparked fresh discussions about whether Nigeria should reshape its democracy to better serve its citizens.
