Essex Police said the shooting on April 18 was part of a feud between two rival groups.
During their sentencing yesterday, Judge Richard Conley said the trio thought they were “untouchable” before their offending.
He slammed the offending as an “act of madness”.
The court heard how the group obtained weapons before driving to the home of the victim and his family to “lay in wait”.
The victim then collected his children to drive them to a safer location in convoy but when they left home they drove into the gunmen.
An drove next to the van and fired shots at close range.
Judge Conley said: “It was a minor miracle that [the victim] was not seriously injured or killed.
“In fact he is an exceptional man, a very robust gentleman who appears to have escaped physically and psychologically unharmed.”

They also admitted to a string of other offences including several home burglaries prior to the sentencing.
The force arrested Johnny Smith, 20, from Oak Road Crays Hill on the A127 in Wickford.
He was jailed for 13-and-a-half-years on Thursday after being convicted of grievous bodily harm with intent, possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and burglary offences.
Donny Archer, 27, of Kelvedon Road, Tiptree, was also jailed for 18 years at Basildon Crown Court for the same offences.
As was Nelson Buckland, 21, of Risebridge Chase, Romford, east London who was sentenced to 12-and-a-half-years.
