The Senate has reiterated the National Assembly’s dedication to implementing timely and people-focused amendments to the 1999 Constitution.
Deputy Senate President Senator Barau I. Jibrin (APC, Kano North) made this statement on Friday during the two-day joint retreat of the Senate and House of Representatives’ Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution held in Lagos.
Senator Jibrin urged lawmakers to ensure that the initial set of amendments is sent to the State Houses of Assembly by the end of the year.
According to DAILY POST, the retreat was organized to provide members of the joint committees the opportunity to examine the proposed amendments “clause by clause.”
A total of 69 bills, 55 requests for state creation, two boundary adjustments, and 278 requests for local government creation are set to be reviewed during the retreat.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, Senator Jibrin remarked, “It has been a lengthy journey to consolidate the Senate and House of Representatives’ proposals for constitutional amendments that encompass various sections and address different topics.
“We have been engaged in this process for the past two years, consulting with constituents, stakeholders, institutions, civil society organizations, and interest groups through town hall meetings, interactive sessions, and public hearings.
“This extensive process has resulted in 69 bills, 55 requests for state creation, two boundary adjustments, and 278 requests for local government creation.”
