BBC icon Clare Balding choked back tears after Team GB suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the curling.

and the rest of the nation felt the pain of Bruce Mouat and Grant Hardie after their interview that left them with a silver medal.

In the BBC studio alongside Vicky Wright, Balding’s voice cracked as she said: “So hard to watch, you can tell how much Grant and Bruce care.”

Balding and Wright then shared a look and Balding could be seen overcome with emotion, as she said: “If you’ve got a tissue in your hand then use it…” before taking a moment to compose herself.

While analysing the defeat, Wright said: “It’s hard because it means to much for them.

“Little things weren’t coming off properly.”

Earlier, skipper Mouat had said: “I’m a bit in shock. We felt like we were the better team there. I don’t know what to say.

“Regardless of the result, the incredible thing we will take away is the amount of people who have come out to support us and have messaged us from back home.

“The boys and I love our sport, we want people to come and join our sport.

“If we can take anything away from ths week as well as the silver medal, it’s being able to inspire people to hopefully want to participate. That is an achievement in itself.”
