The General Secretary of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), Dr. Ayuba Asheshe, has emphasized that there is undeniable evidence of Christian genocide occurring in Nigeria.

He expressed concern that insecurity in the nation has resulted in the destruction of 19,100 churches, the abduction of 600 clergymen, and the deaths of thousands of Christians.

During a briefing with journalists in Jos, Asheshe noted that documented evidence reveals that 1,200 churches are burned and destroyed each year, averaging about 100 per month or three per day, amounting to a total of 19,100 churches over the past 16 years.

Furthermore, he reported that more than 600 clergy members, including 350 pastors and 250 Catholic priests, have been kidnapped across various regions, with many tragically losing their lives.

Additionally, the General Secretary referenced statistics from Open Doors USA indicating that 82% of Christians killed globally between October 2022 and September 2023 were from Nigeria, while over 3.5 million Christians have been displaced, with their homes and churches reduced to ashes.

According to reports from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED), he stated that many Christians have been killed in Nigeria over the last two decades, particularly within the ECWA community.

Within ECWA alone, he mentioned that 208 members were abducted between 2023 and 2024, many of whom have died while in captivity.

He urged the government to take stronger actions to halt the ongoing attacks, the burning of churches, and the killings of Christians throughout the country.

He commended the recent initiatives by the Federal Government aimed at enhancing the security framework in Nigeria.

According to him, although these measures are still in the early stages, they represent a positive shift towards safeguarding human life, ensuring justice, and rebuilding trust in the government’s ability to protect its citizens.
