An Abuja-based human rights lawyer, Maxwell Opara, has lent his voice to the issue of medical negligence in Nigerian hospitals.

In an interview on Arise Television, monitored by DAILY POST on Tuesday, Opara said Nigerians should know that medical negligence is not business as usual.

The lawyer was reacting to the death of Chimamanda Adichie’s son, whose incident happened in a Lagos hospital.

He said, “So this is the only area to let Nigerians know that if you commit medical negligence, it is not going to be business as usual.

“So we, the citizens, also encourage them because once such a thing happens, we follow it up to the latter so that others can learn from it.

“Most medical practitioners and even teachers don’t know what is medical negligence in line with the law. Most of them don’t even know the legal framework that regulates their professional practices.

“If in real life this medical negligence happened, either they consider religion, culture or they say you are going to court for someone who is dead? Let’s leave it for God.

“These are the challenges we are having. And that is why we see the increase of medical negligence. Check the rate of medical negligence here in Nigeria.”
