An explosion occurred at the downtown store around 3 PM local time on Saturday, sending dense black smoke rising over the city as frightened shoppers escaped.

Videos shared online depicted flames consuming the building, chaotic evacuations, and firefighters combating the blaze amidst charred vehicles and a soot-covered exterior.

Authorities reported that the fire destroyed the store and caused damage to nearby structures.

At least 12 individuals sustained injuries, with many in critical condition.

Sonora’s governor, Alfonso Durazo, confirmed that children and two pregnant women were among the deceased.

Durazo stated: “I have ordered a comprehensive and transparent investigation to determine the causes of the incident.”

He also mentioned that emergency teams and hospitals were working tirelessly to care for the survivors.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum extended her condolences via social media, writing: “My deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of those who perished.”

She indicated that federal teams had been sent to support the victims' families.

Gustavo Salas, Sonora’s attorney general, noted that the majority of the fatalities seemed to have resulted from inhalation of toxic fumes.

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, although local media have suggested a potential electrical failure.
