Renowned singer Yemi Alade has revealed her experience with a brief cigarette addiction, explaining that she became hooked on smoking during her teenage years but ultimately quit because “it didn’t suit her.”
The "Johnny" hitmaker elaborated that she battled this addiction in private while concealing it in public, which prompted her to abandon the habit as she felt ashamed of it.
In a frank interview with Chude, Alade admitted that smoking was detrimental to her health, particularly affecting her voice.
“Some people say they don’t smoke or engage in certain behaviors. When I was in university, I experimented with smoking. It didn’t suit me. However, before it didn’t suit me, I became a bit too reliant on it. I found myself needing to smoke before going to bed, and I was becoming addicted to that lifestyle. Yet, in public, I would conceal my cigarette.
“I began to question, ‘What kind of life is this; the discomfort of needing to smoke before bed, only to hide it when I go out?’ As a teenager in university, trying to navigate life, I made certain choices for myself. If I have to hide something, then I don’t want to do it. I prefer to be conscious of my surroundings and my choices. Eventually, I concluded that cigarettes were not for me.
“They are not meant for me. They caused me harm and affected my voice, anyway. So, I decided to stop. My smoking habit lasted less than a year,” she shared.
