However, after retiring from football at the age of 29, the German has embarked on a very different career path.

In recent years, Schürrle has taken on various extreme hiking challenges across Europe.

In January, he completed an extraordinary ‘Iceman’ challenge that pushed his limits.

Now, Schürrle is elevating his passion for extreme sports to new heights.

He is set to participate in an epic ultra marathon.

Nevertheless, Schürrle is eagerly anticipating taking part in the biggest race of his life.

He expressed: “I’m fascinated by how far you can push yourself when your body is already screaming to stop.

“This very moment — when only your mind is making the decision — is at the heart of the Last Soul Ultra.

“There are certain challenges I embrace. I want to grow from these tough moments in my life.

“Of course, this also involves extremes. But to be honest, I don’t feel like I’ve fully immersed myself in extreme sports yet.”

Schürrle was once considered one of Europe’s top wingers, having first made his mark at Bundesliga clubs Mainz and Bayer Leverkusen.

Chelsea acquired Schürrle for £18 million in 2013.

He went on to score 14 goals in 65 appearances while winning the Premier League and Carabao Cup under Jose Mourinho.

Schürrle then spent 18 months at Wolfsburg, where he won the German Cup and German SuperCup.

A subsequent two-year stint at Borussia Dortmund resulted in another German Cup victory.

He returned to England with Fulham in 2018, netting six times in 25 appearances for the club.

The following season saw him loaned to Russian side Spartak Moscow.

Despite being shy of 30, Schürrle decided it was time to retire from professional football.

He concluded his career with 57 caps for Germany, scoring an impressive 22 goals during his tenure.

Schürrle provided the assist for Mario Götze’s extra-time winner in the 2014 World Cup final against Argentina.

His last appearance for Germany came in 2017.
