The show even produced some huge stars including actor and filmmaker Joel Edgerton and movie star Deborah Mailman.
And now co-creator and producer Amanda Higgs has revealed that the show is in very early talks for a reboot – but she might not return.
In response to calls for a reboot, she said: “There’s a lot of talk…. well, not a lot… there’s a tiny bit of talk about whether we’ll do Secret Life again.”
She then ruled herself out of being part of it, but hinted that it could still be in the pipeline, saying: ” No! I am too old to make that show.
“I think if you’re creating for younger audiences, you have to have that younger sensibility.”
She said last week at RMIT’s 100 Years of Television symposium: “Now I look around and think a lot of the commissioners that have been in TV for a while now.
“So what I think it needs is a new wave of television makers, not white people. Young people. And I think we need it in our commissioners as well.
“I think that’s when things start to change. I was very fortunate, I think, with Secret Life, to be one version of that change, or to be in the mix of a conversation where I felt like we had a platform to say some things about young people that reflected how we lived.
“But now we need the next.”
The show followed a group of friends in their mid 20 who lived in a block of flats in the suburb.
The series also featured Claudia Karvan, Sam Johnson, Abi Tucker, Sibylla Budd, David Tredinnick, Spencer McLaren, Damian De Montemas and Michael Dorman.
Meanwhile, Deborah was one of the show’s breakout stars, portraying the central character Kelly Lewis.
She has since become one of Australia‘s best-loved actresses, starring in Offspring, The Sapphires, Redfern Now, and Cleverman.
Joel, who played scaffolder Will in the series, went onto become a major Hollywood star, director, and producer.
He received praise for roles like Warrior, The Gift, Loving.
He also gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Owen Lars in the franchise and starred The Great Gatsby and Animal Kingdom.
