The home‑based Super Eagles suffered a disappointing 1‑0 defeat to defending champions Senegal in their opening fixture at the 2024 African Nations Championship on Tuesday.

Both teams struggled to gain control in the opening minutes, with Nigeria edging possession.

Tochukwu Michael received the first yellow card of the game in the sixth minute for a rash tackle.

The Home Eagles registered their first shot on target in the 21st minute, with Sikiru Alimi’s tame effort comfortably saved by the Senegalese goalkeeper.

Captain Junior Nduka was cautioned three minutes later for a rough challenge.

Nigeria dominated the early stages of the second half, but Senegal stood firm at the back.

It was Senegal who took the lead through Christian Kobi 15 minutes from time.

The Eagles will face Sudan in their second Group D game at the Amman Stadium, Zanzibar, next Tuesday.

Earlier, Congo held Sudan to a 1‑1 draw in the other Group D fixture.
