Under various different guises, the play-offs have existed since 1987, and have included four second-tier sides since 1989.
According to Sky Sports , however, there is “widespread support” among Championship clubs for expanding the play-offs.
A vote on the new format among all EFL clubs will take place at a general meeting on March 5.
To go through, at least 13 of the 24 current Championship clubs must vote in favour, as well as 37 of the 72 in the entire EFL.
