After a successful playing career that ended with him hanging up his boots at Sporting Lisbon, Jeremy Mathieu has since swapped life as a footballer for retail, and it comes down to one main reason.
Speaking beIN Sports, he explained: “If I’m working at Intersport, it’s because something’s going on that’s causing me quite a few problems.
“I can only say that I’m in the middle of a lawsuit.”
He added: “I tried to stay involved in football, like everyone else.
“In amateur football. I won’t do it (work at Intersport) forever. I do it to have a social life and see people.”
It’s quite the change for a man who once claimed he could take a better free-kick than superstar and icon .
The winner and multi Ballon d’Or winner is still plying his trade in the with Inter Miami.
He is aiming to win the ultimate prize in football once more with Argentina this summer.
But Mathieu once quipped: “Lionel Messi was incredible.
“You couldn’t do anything in training. [But] I think I was a better free-kick taker than him,”
Mathieu began his pro career in France with Sochaux.
He then moved to Toulouse before a switch to La Liga with Valencia.
It was there he caught the eye of Barcelona who swooped on their top flight rivals to land the defender.
He went on to play over 90 games for the Nou Camp outfit and enjoyed a trophy laden spell.
He lifted the and two La Liga titles during his time at the club.
He also got numerous Spanish Cup winners’ medals on top of a Uefa Super Cup and Spanish Super Cup gong.
