Censorship board shuts down entertainment centres over indecency, license violations in Kano

Published on May 22, 2025 at 01:40 PM

The Kano State Film and Video Censorship Board has revoked the operational licences of eight gala entertainment centres across the state, citing persistent violations of cultural, religious, and regulatory standards.

Announcing the development in a statement on Wednesday, the Executive Secretary of the board, Abba El-Mustapha, said the closure is part of ongoing efforts to sanitise the entertainment sector and enforce compliance with societal values.

“This action reflects our commitment to ensuring that Kano’s entertainment industry operates within the boundaries of our laws and moral standards,”;; El-Mustapha said.

“The banned centres have repeatedly flouted the board’s guidelines, and their operations are no longer permissible.”;;

The affected centres include: Hamdala Entertainment in Ungoggo; Lady J Entertainment, Dan Hausa Entertainment, and Wazobiya Entertainment in Sanya Olu; Ni’ima Entertainment in Zungeru; Ariya Entertainment in Abedi Sabon Gari; Babbangida Entertainment in Balatus; and Harsashi Entertainment in Ebedi Sabon Gari.

According to El-Mustapha, the proscribed venues were involved in hosting late-night events, displaying vulgar content, and operating without necessary regulatory approvals.

He warned that attempts to rebrand or resume operations under new names would attract prosecution.

“Our monitoring teams are vigilant. Any individual or group caught attempting to bypass this ban will be arrested and prosecuted,”;; he said.
