Former Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice, Michael Aondoakaa, SAN, has said the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo acted in Nigeria’s best interest while handing over Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon.

Before it was ceded to Cameroon, Bakassi was a Nigerian territory in Cross River State.

Speaking on Arise Television, Aondoakaa, who was the AGF in Obasanjo’s government, said the decision was taken with the best intentions.

“I believe in equity, and I believe that things should be done in such a way that the whole, the whole country, should be taken together. I had a sleepless night when we handed over Bakassi and when people insinuated that we made a wrong decision and endangered the security of the country.

“I feel a duty to clarify this. We acted in the best interest of this nation. Former President Obasanjo ensured that the line of demarcation did not adversely affect Nigeria or Cross River State.

“After I left office, I cannot speak to what evidence was presented to the Supreme Court; there may have been errors in the data submitted,” he said.
