Michael Carrick Unveils Transfer Plans and Ambitions for His First Season as Manchester United Manager

He Said: “I think we’ve got a pretty good balance in all when you lay the squad out, but yeah, of course, we would like more.

“We would like more, we need to keep pushing for more.

“There are one or two areas where we’d like to improve and we feel that there’s the possibility to improve.

“But again, that needs to be something that we can do that makes us better and improves the group, whether that’s quality or whether that’s a little bit of depth.

“That’s something we’ve got to manage. That’s pretty obvious.”

Manchester City, Tottenham and Chelsea have all spent at least £100m on a signing and newly-promoted Ipswich Town and Coventry City have outspent United so far this summer.

United invested £85m on Santos and Tielemans, having baulked at the valuation of the £116m Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, who moved to Tottenham for £85m.

Carrick added: “Money’s money. I get that. It’s still about the football and that’s where the competition lies.

“So I think there’s a balance of responsibility of this club to – and what we feel naturally as a group anyway – is to try and win games and be successful.

“We feel like we’ve got to be pushing for everything that we’re involved in, understanding a little bit, being realistic of what the recent history’s looked like as well, and that’s over a period of time.

“But then actually the confidence we’ve taken from the last few months, and what we kind of achieved in the league.

“So there’s a lot that goes into that, but certainly the situation is what it is as well, whether that’s finances or whatever.

“For now, we’ve got to make the most of it, but we’ve got to keep pushing, really, and push everything in every boundary that we can to be able to win again, basically.

“And that’s the challenge at the end of the day, whether that’s this season or hopefully the one after. It needs to be, I say it needs to be, we want it to be as soon as possible, and that’s what we’re all aiming for.”

United are the only club from the old “Big Six” in the Premier League to have not spent £100m on a signing.

When asked whether United can win the title without a £100m player, Carrick replied: “A little bit depends on what position that is and what you’ve got and what dynamics you need at certain points.

“Sometimes you do need that if it’s the right player. Again, it’s not purely on money.

“Just the money doesn’t guarantee you, it needs to be the right player and a better player for what we’ve got.

“It’s something obviously over time we need to, we need to be pushing to look to enhance the squad all the time in different ways.

“So, yeah, 100 per cent we need to do that.

“It’s constant communication of where, what work we need to do, where we want to improve.

“But again, a lot of it’s the dynamics of the group, where we are, personalities.

“Character’s one thing, what we think we can get out of certain players in certain positions, what direction we want to go in.

“But yeah, we’re pretty clear in the messages that we need to keep pushing and there’s certain things that we want to try and do, but it needs to be right as well.”
