The minnows qualified for the tournament for the first time ever but were not given much of a prayer in terms of results.
However, Cape Verde immediately stuck it to their doubters by earning a surprise draw with in the first game – arguably one of the biggest upsets ever given the 65 spots between them and even crazier considering Spain went on to win the tournament.
They then followed that up by drawing to and then drawing with and qualifying for the Round of 32, where they were drawn against .
Bubista’s side performed valiantly and took and Co into extra time before they were eliminated.
And weeks after the tournament, Bubista became the head club of Moroccan club RS Berkane.
A club statement announced he had signed a two-year contract.
It added: “This signing comes as part of the club’s ongoing sporting project and its commitment to bolstering its competitive ambitions both domestically and continentally.
“It relies on high technical expertise and distinguished experience in global— and particularly African — football, while providing opportunities to nurture and elevate our brilliant young talents.

Bubista won Africa’s coach of the year award for his efforts in getting Cape Verde to the World Cup for the first time in 2025.
He had managed a quartet of Cape Verdean clubs in Mindelense, Académica do Mindelo, Sporting Praia and Batuque before taking the national team role in 2020.
Berkane won the Moroccan league in 2025 and finished runners up in the league this year, while they also reached the CAF semi-finals last season.
