Firefighters also helped rescue efforts and prevented the bus from rolling further down the cliff on the island of La Gomera.

The holiday hotspot is known for its picturesque landscapes – but also has very narrow roads across high mountain points.

Local authorities said the crash happened on the GM-2 in San Sebastian.

The site of the horror ordeal is near a mountain tunnel and a hazardous hairpin bend high above the rocky terrain.

Emergency services said: “One person has died, three people are seriously injured and 11 others have suffered moderate injuries.

“The Canary Islands Emergency Service has sent to the scene of the accident a medicalized helicopter, five ambulances and a medical team including nurses.”

The nationalities of the passengers is currently unclear – and it is still unknown how or why the bus careered off the road.
