I’VE been clocking the miles this week with rides here, there and everywhere.
My driver Bob has earned his crust, but after a couple of near misses it was great to get a winner on the board at Doncaster yesterday.
I was up there to ride Hurricane Bay for Lucy Wadham in the novice hurdle and he was very impressive.
We have always liked him and he had to do it the hard way, making all the running in a small field.
He was joined in the straight but really battled for the win and he was going clear again at the line.
He is learning all the time and we reckon he is going to be a nice horse going forward. He’s one for you to follow this winter, take my word on that.
This time last week I was up at Haydock to ride Frodon in the Betfair Chase, and he gave his all, as ever, to finish third.
Most importantly he has come out of the race great and he will take it easy for a few days now. We will fill up the tank and go again.
If he is ready for the King George then I know Paul wants to aim for that.
We were really pleased with him, he never lets us down and hopefully he will be back in the winners’ enclosure before long.
I’m back on the road to north Wales this afternoon to ride a very talented horse at Bangor called SIR PSYCHO (12.53).
He is a horse with plenty of ability – he was fifth in the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham a couple of years ago – but this is his first run for over 700 days.
Paul has got plenty of work into him, he can get them very fit at home. But after such a long lay-off there is no doubt he will improve for the outing today.
He is on a good mark for his chasing debut and he has schooled well at home, so we are hopeful of a good run on testing ground – which he absolutely loves.
It’s a big day for the rest of the team Ditcheat at Newbury, with THREEUNDERTHRUFIVE (3.05) our contender in the Coral Gold Cup.
He had high-class form over fences in his novice season, winning a couple of Grade 2s at Warwick and Doncaster.
Paul gave him a pipe-opener over hurdles at Wetherby last month and that should hopefully have put him spot on for today.
He wears first-time cheekpieces and he goes there with a big chance.
