The Brazilian captain did not hold back after their rivals moved four points ahead of them in the league standings.
He stated: “The entire message in the locker room today was to play for the fans, and we failed to do that.
“It’s incredibly embarrassing and frustrating for me because we know we're a better team than them. It’s obvious.
“However, we didn’t play like a superior team today, which makes me feel angry.
“I need to be careful with my words because I’m very upset with our performance.”
He acknowledged this was the most painful defeat of his time at Newcastle, adding: “It’s not just about the loss, but the manner in which we played.
“I feel disappointed, frustrated, and we lacked energy. We didn’t execute the basics like crossing or passing the ball.
“In my opinion, we were a complete mess. I’m disappointed and angry. This one is hard to swallow.
“We should have performed much better. I don’t want to discuss the opposing team. It’s about us and how we played.
“We were absent. No passing, no crossing, nothing. No competition, no display of desire.
“We understand the significance of this match, and we didn’t perform as we should have, so I’m very angry.”
He was also quick to apologize to the Toon Army following such a lackluster performance.
The Toon manager, whose team has yet to earn a single point from a losing position in the Premier League this season, remarked: “This will sting for a long time.
“We recognize that our performance was not what it needed to be. Defensively, I thought we played well throughout the match, but we weren’t effective enough in breaking them down.
“Criticism comes with every defeat, but of course, this one will resonate louder and stronger due to the importance of the game.
“We fully acknowledge that, which is why it hurts so much.
“It’s deeply disappointing for our supporters, and we apologize for the lack of goalmouth action and clinical finishing that we have prided ourselves on in recent seasons.”
While it was misery on Tyneside, it was a time of celebration for Sunderland and the rest of Wearside.
The victorious Sunderland manager stated: “We will relish this result, but I’m especially happy for the players, the club, and the fans because they deserve it.
The result places the Black Cats four points and five positions ahead of Eddie Howe’s side in the Premier League standings
“I quickly understood what this game meant to the community – it was probably clear from my first day here!
“I’m delighted for the fans because this was an important match for them, and they were integral to our success today.
“It’s incredibly rewarding to feel this energy and support. The players handled the situation well.”
Sunderland celebrated their victory by posing for a commemorative photo in front of the Roker end, mimicking Newcastle’s actions after their 3-0 win here in January 2024.
The goalkeeper remarked: “It was mentioned beforehand, similar to the speech we had.
“Maybe it was a little bit [planned].
“I don’t know much about it, but we were told that the last time they won here, they took pictures in front of our fans.
“We used that as extra motivation today.”
