The Belgian tourist’s last known sighting occurred in the Philosopher Falls area near Cradle Mountain in northwest Tasmania on June 17, 2023.
In a significant breakthrough, a dedicated group of volunteers, including Celine’s family and friends from Belgium, discovered her mobile phone.
The Samsung device was located nearly two-and-a-half years after she went missing, following months of unsuccessful search efforts.
An astonishing image revealed the missing backpacker’s phone tightly hidden beneath a patch of grass and foliage.
The phone was found “less than 100 metres from her last known GPS point,” according to Tasmanian explorer Rob Parsons.
He stated: “This confirms the theory that Celine lost her phone shortly after recording her last location and gives us clear direction on the path she was taking.
“While there is still work to be done before we achieve full closure, this is a notable step forward.”
The rescue team member who found the phone, Tony Hage, expressed his shock at the discovery: “I was speechless. I just couldn't find the words.
“I was overwhelmed. What else could be out here? It’s very unlikely to find another phone in this area.”
Parsons, who helped organize the search, added: “We will deploy trained search and rescue officers and SES volunteers on the ground when weather conditions permit the search to resume.”
Local authorities commended the volunteer team's discovery, with Inspector Andrew Hanson stating: “Tasmania Police resources are now officially joining the independent search effort.
“We will have trained search and rescue officers and SES volunteers on the ground when weather conditions allow the search to continue.”
Police believe Celine was hiking alone along the Philosopher Falls track just before she disappeared.
They suspect that she chose to leave the trail and take a “direct route back to her car” as daylight began to fade.
“We suspect she dropped her phone and continued without it, becoming disoriented in the dense terrain,” Hanson explained.
The explorer noted that while the discovery of the phone was a positive development, it highlighted the tragic situation for Celine’s loved ones.
He remarked: “While finding her phone has provided some hope for the many people invested in this case, it serves as a stark reminder of the tragedy for Celine’s family.”
Celine was traveling alone when she mysteriously vanished.
It took nine days for anyone to notify the police that she was missing.
Authorities located her car at the Philosopher Falls car park on June 26, just before severe weather hit the region.
Hanson detailed: “In the days following Celine’s disappearance, the winter weather in the area included subzero temperatures, snow, and rainfall.
“Expert medical advice at the time indicated that those conditions were not survivable for the duration she is believed to have been exposed.
“Our initial search lasted for two weeks, and follow-up searches have been conducted numerous times over the last two years, with no additional signs of her found until yesterday.”
