The violence has since drawn national political attention after one of the victims was identified as a Department of Homeland Security employee.
DHS is a federal agency responsible for national security, immigration enforcement, and border protection.
Lauren Bullis, 40, worked as an auditor for DHS’s Office of Inspector General – the department’s internal watchdog responsible for auditing and investigating government operations.
She was killed after being attacked while walking her dog.
Bullis had taken her dog out for a stroll around 7am on Monday morning.
Police say she was shot and stabbed during what they believe was a wider killing spree.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said in a statement: “These acts of pure evil have devastated our department and my prayers are with the families of the victim.”
He also said the suspect had a prior criminal record, though he did not specify timing or detail.
The first attack happened around 1 a.m. outside a Checkers restaurant on Wesley Chapel Road in DeKalb County, a suburb outside Atlanta.
A woman, identified as 31-year-old Prianna Weathers, was shot and later died in hospital.
Roughly an hour later, the suspect allegedly drove around 16 miles to Brookhaven, another Atlanta suburb.
There, a 49-year-old homeless man was shot multiple times while sleeping outside a Kroger grocery store – a large US supermarket chain.
He remains in critical condition.
Police believe he was targeted at random.
“It is apparent to us that it was a completely random attack on a member of our unhoused community,” Brookhaven Police Chief Brandon Gurley said.
The final attack took place several hours later in Panthersville, where Bullis was found with gunshot and stab wounds and pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators later confirmed all three attacks were connected.
Adon Abel, who lives in Atlanta, was arrested later that day during a traffic stop in Troup County – on the Georgia-Alabama border.
He faces two counts of malice murder – a US legal charge meaning intentional killing without justification – along with aggravated assault and firearms offences.
He waived his initial court appearance on Tuesday.
No attorney has yet been listed.
Bullis worked across multiple roles in DHS’s Office of Inspector General, including as an auditor and Team Leader in the Office of Innovation.
The department said she brought “warmth, kindness, and a genuine sense of care” to colleagues.
Her family described her as “selfless, kind and compassionate.”
“She deeply loved her family and found joy in running, reading and traveling,” they said. “Her warmth and generosity touched everyone around her.”
The suspect’s brother, Toyin Adon Abel Jr., declined to discuss the case in detail but expressed sympathy for victims.
“I feel terrible for the victims, their families and their connections. Its a horrible thing,” he said.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin also alleged the suspect had a significant prior criminal record.
In a separate statement, he said: “He possesses a prior criminal record that includes convictions for sexual battery, battery against a police officer, obstruction, and assault with a deadly weapon.
He also holds convictions for vandalism and now stands accused of murdering [DHS] employee Lauren Bullis by shooting and stabbing her while she walked her dog.”
Mullin continued: “These acts of pure evil have devastated our department and my prayers are with the families of the victim.”
He also said: “Since President Trump took office, @USCIS has implemented measures to ensure individuals with criminal histories and who otherwise lack good moral character do not attain citizenship.”
USCIS – U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services – is the federal agency responsible for granting citizenship and managing immigration applications.
Online court records show that a man named Adon Olaolukitan – sharing the same birth date as the suspect – pleaded guilty last June in Chatham County, Georgia, to four misdemeanour counts of sexual battery.
It remains unclear if this refers to the same individual, or whether any convictions predated his US citizenship in 2022.
Authorities have also linked further allegations to the suspect, including a prior conviction in October 2024 in San Diego, California, where he pleaded guilty to felony assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer or firefighter.
He was sentenced to probation, though full details have not been made public.
He was also arrested in Savannah, Georgia, in April 2025, accused of groping four women within hours.
Records say at least one victim was walking her dog. He received 120 days in jail, three years’ probation, and was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation.
In the aftermath of Bullis’s death, her family is now searching for her dog, Sancho, who was with her at the time of the attack.
A neighbour who ran outside after hearing gunfire told 11Alive it appeared the suspect may have been attempting to sexually assault Bullis during the attack.
Despite the brutality and speed of the attacks, investigators are still working to establish a clear motive.
Brookhaven police said at least one of the victims appears to have been chosen at random, and they are still investigating whether all three were targeted without warning.
The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement: “We are deeply saddened to confirm that Lauren Bullis, a beloved member of the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General team, has tragically passed away,” a spokesperson said.
“She was a respected colleague whose contributions and presence will be greatly missed.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends, as well as to the families, friends, and communities of the additional victims.”
The agency declined to comment further on the suspect or the ongoing investigation.
