A BRITISH man has been found dead in the sea at a popular Algarve holiday spot.
The 58-year-old was spotted floating in the water off Pintadinho Beach, near Portimão, on Wednesday morning before being pulled ashore.
Two lifeguards desperately performed CPR before emergency crews arrived and took over efforts to revive him.
But the man could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene.
It is not yet known whether he was holidaying in or lived in the area.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.
An autopsy is expected to establish whether he drowned or suffered a medical emergency while in the water.
Portugal’s National Maritime Authority said the alarm was raised at around 9.19am.
Psychologists were also sent to the scene to support the Brit’s devastated family.
A spokesman said: “The body of a 58-year-old English national man has been found floating at Pintadinho beach, in the municipality of Lagoa, with the causes of the incident unknown.
“Upon arrival at the scene, it was found that the victim had already been removed from the water by two lifeguards who began resuscitation efforts until the arrival of the emergency response teams.”
“The Maritime Police Office was activated and is providing support to the victim’s family.”
There is currently no suggestion the death is being treated as suspicious.
Pintadinho Beach is a small Blue Flag cove near the fishing village of Ferragudo, framed by the Algarve’s distinctive ochre-coloured cliffs.
The tragedy came shortly before another holidaymaker died in the sea just a short drive away.
A 64-year-old Irish man got into difficulties at Prainha Beach in Alvor on Thursday morning.
The alarm was raised shortly after 10.30am at the beach, around a 20-minute drive west of Pintadinho.
