BIRMINGHAM CITY are set to unveil a “chimney-themed” design for their new £3billion stadium.

Last week it was reported as a consultant over the building of their planned new home.

The Blues owner, Tom Wagner, who leads US-based group Knightshead, spoke about how he wants the designs to be “one of the most talked about stadium designs ever”.

The plans are being created by Heatherwick Studio, in partnership with Kansas-based company, Manica.

And according to the Daily Mail , those familiar with the plans understand there is set to be a “chimney theme”.

This is said to come as a nod to the industrial history of the city, with the Adam’s Soap Works Chimney located in Smethwick holding the record for the world’s tallest chimney – a whopping 312 feet tall – between 1835 and 1842.

The plans, based around a 62,000-seater stadium on a 48-acre site that will be known as the Sports Quarter in Bordesley, east , are set to be made public next month.

Wagner, who leads the ownership group including icon , also said last week: “We don’t have designs on becoming a national stadium.

“But we would certainly want it to be a place that hosts national level and international level events.”

creator Knight also said: “I wanted to offer the architects some words of advice about what supporters will like and won’t like.

“This stadium is a reflection of the past 150 years and hopefully it will be something that’s still around in 150 years from now.

“I think we’re going to do something internationally special.”
