Police in Anambra State have vowed to tackle any threat to peace arising from separatist elements who plan to mark the Biafra Day celebration on Friday.

Already, some schools in Anambra have declared Friday lecture-free day, because of threats from separatists.

The state police command said it has also made strategic deployment of operatives to various areas, especially popular junctions to ensure that no threat to life arises.

A statement by the the state police command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga said operatives of the command are fired up and very motivated to face challenges.

Ikenga said a closed-door meeting of the Anambra Security Service Commanders has been held ahead of the “illegal Biafra Day celebration scheduled for 30th May 2025 by some criminal elements”;.

He said: “Police-led Joint Security Force comprising the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), other Security agencies as well as the Army and Navy complimenting the security deployment, have intensified patrols and taken over the strategic junctions in Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi, Ihiala, Oraifite and many other parts of the State.

“This demonstrates the commitment of the security agencies to maintaining security and order as their heightened presence aims to deter criminal activities, reassure the public, and provide a safe environment for citizens and visitors alike.

“This collective effort has further strengthened the resolve of the security agencies to tackle threats to peace and security in the State, fostering a safer environment through Community-Police collaboration.”;

He added that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has noted the increased motivation of the police and other security agencies stemming from the cooperation and support received from Anambra residents in joining voices to condemn any act that threatens peace in the state.

He shared the phone numbers of heads of various divisions of the police in the state, calling on citizens to provide information about any breech of peace in their area.
