In light of recent abduction incidents involving schoolchildren in Niger and Kebbi states, the Benue State Police Command has assured the public that schools within the state are well-protected.

NAN reports that the State Commissioner of Police, Emenari Ifeanyi, informed journalists on Friday that security measures have been reinforced around schools to avert any unfortunate events.

He elaborated that, alongside the Schools Protection Squad (SPS), police personnel have been deployed at various schools throughout the state, with a specific focus on girls' schools.

He stated, “The Inspector General of Police has already instructed the commissioners of police nationwide to ensure the security of schools and places of worship, including our mosques.

Prior to this, we had already assigned security personnel to all public schools in the state, particularly those for girls.

“Currently, we have stationed permanent security personnel there, while in other schools, we have deployed officers to conduct routine patrols and advised the principals to have police contact numbers available, so that in case of any incident, they can immediately reach out to the police for prompt action.

“We have also organized a program to train both teachers and students on the appropriate actions to take in case of an emergency, particularly on how to contact the police, ensuring our schools are adequately covered.”

Regarding the upcoming Yuletide celebrations, Mr. Ifeanyi mentioned that proactive measures are being implemented to ensure safety throughout the state.

“Members of my management team have been assigned to the hinterland, and all other commands are being led by deputy commissioners and assistant commissioners, in addition to other commanders on the ground with tactical teams in the areas facing challenges.

“We have established a heightened presence of skilled police teams across the state, and as we speak, they are positioned in all corners of the state to help maintain peace, especially in areas that appear to be volatile. We have advised the public that if they observe any suspicious activity, they should inform their DPO and area commanders.”

“We are collaborating with sister security agencies in all divisions within the state, as well as the military, NSCDC, the Civil Protection Guard, Forest Guards, the Hunters Association, and Local Government chairmen to ensure that the state does not experience any form of crime during the festive season.”
