Benue: Idoma group reveals real reason behind recent herdsmen attacks

Published on June 20, 2025 at 10:26 AM

A socio-cultural group, the Ochetoha K’Idoma has said that the incessant killings of Benue people is due to the relaxation of the anti-open grazing law in the state.

The President of the group, Magaji Mike Alidu, stated this on Friday in an exclusive interview with DAILY POST, saying that the recent attack on Benue that claimed over 200 lives was not because of the ultimatum the two paramount rulers in the state gave to the Fulani herders.

Alidu said that the herders were resisting because Benue people have come together in unison asking the herders to evacuate.

“The recent massacre of over 200 people was not as a result of the ultimatum because, before, during and after the ultimatum, they attacked our people and they are still carrying out this attack.

“The reason they are attacking us in this manner is that the anti-open grazing law is being relaxed in the state. If the law was being implemented, this thing would not have been happening.

“They are resisting because Benue have come together with one voice from the youth, from the traditional council that have asked them to evacuate because this is farming season and Benue people need to go back to their farms,”; he said.
