The controversy over electricity tariff reduction in states rages on as the state electricity commissioners on Wednesday backed the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission’s decision to cut Band A customers’ tariffs.

The Forum of Commissioners for Power and Energy in Nigeria (FOCPEN) stated this position in a statement signed jointly by its chairman, Eka William (Cross River State Commissioner for Power), and its secretary, Omale Omale (Benue State Commissioner for Power).

Accordingly, in separate statements, DisCos and GenCos kicked against the move for states to reduce tariffs for Band A customers on the grounds that it would worsen the existing challenges in the country’s electricity market.

However, FOCPEN supported EERC on the reduction of the Band A tariff, effective from August 1, 2025.

“The EERC, acting within the ambit of its regulatory provisions, has set tariffs appropriately based on these findings, aiming for a cost-reflective and fair market for consumers and operators alike.”

Meanwhile, FOCPEN added that while Enugu State has, based on its specific market conditions and regulatory findings, adjusted its Band A tariffs downwards, that did not dictate a uniform approach for other states.
