Tributes have been paid to a Spanish basketball player who tragically lost his life after being struck by a train while on his way to team practice.
Nicolas Ramirez Perez, 22, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after a high-speed passenger train, carrying over 100 people, collided with him at a rural station near the northern city of Zaragoza. He was declared deceased shortly after his arrival on Monday evening.
Perez was heading to practice when the tragedy occurred.
His club, CB Octavus de Utebo, announced the suspension of all league matches scheduled for the upcoming weekend following his death.
The Zaragoza-based club stated in a message released yesterday: “In light of the immense loss we have suffered and as a gesture of mourning for the tragic event that occurred yesterday, all league matches planned for this weekend have been canceled.
“Additionally, most training sessions for today have also been suspended.
“From the extended family that constitutes Octavus Basketball Club, we wish to express our support and deepest condolences to the family and friends of Nico. Sending a big hug.”
A spokesperson added in a separate message: “Sometimes, life feels incredibly unfair, and it is hard to comprehend why things happen.
“We are shocked, saddened, and frustrated by fate. It wasn’t your time…
“We will miss you, N. You will always be a part of this club.”
The regional Aragon Federation also issued a statement, saying: “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and teammates of Nicolas Ramirez Perez following his passing.
“He had dedicated five years to playing for his club. Sending a big hug to everyone. Rest in peace.”
The incident that led to the death of the Pamplona-born basketball player took place at a station named Casetas, located just over 10 miles from Zaragoza, where Nicolas was transported for medical attention.
He was crossing the tracks in the rural area when he was struck by the train, which was not scheduled to stop at the station. He had just disembarked from another train at the station moments before the collision.
The club's secretary, Enrique Peiro, confirmed that the young athlete was en route to training when the tragic event occurred.
A police investigation into the incident is currently ongoing. A local mayor has stated that safety measures need to be enhanced at the station, citing that the official crossing was “poorly illuminated.”
