BARCELONA have officially withdrawn from the failed European Super League project.

Five years ago, the project was announced with 12 teams including the ‘big six’ from England agreeing to be part of it.

A short statement reads: “FC Barcelona hereby announces that today it has formally notified the European Super League Company and the clubs involved of its withdrawal from the European Super League project.”

The other teams who had agreed to join at the time were AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus and Atletico Madrid alongside Spain’s big two.

Now with Barcelona officially leaving it means 11 of the 12 teams who had been part of the original announcement in 2021 have left.

Only remain as the last remaining side backing the idea.

The old four team groups of six games consisting of home and away has been replaced by a seeding system.

Teams play eight games in total in the league phase with the top eight directly qualifying for the last 16 with those placed between 9th and 24th entering the play-off round knockout.
