Ballon d’Or 2025: Lewandowski plays down Yamal’s chances

Published on June 03, 2025 at 06:26 PM

Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski has suggested that the organisers of the Ballon d’Or are biased.
He was sceptical about the possibility of his young teammate, Lamine Yamal, winning the award.
According to him, France Football, the organisers of the award, only give it to whoever they deem fit.
Back in 2021, Lewandowski thought he would be crowned the best in the world for that year, but unfortunately for him, the award was given to Lionel Messi, to his disappointment.
Since then, the veteran striker appears to have lost faith in the most prestigious award for players.
Yamal and Ousmane Dembélé of Paris Saint-Germain are the most mentioned players in terms of who might win the award in 2025.
Both Yamal and Dembélé were outstanding for their respective clubs in the just-concluded season.
While Yamal registered 18 goals and 25 assists from 55 games and helped the Catalans win La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Supercopa de España, Dembélé was pivotal for PSG’s triumph in the Champions League, the Ligue 1 title, and two other domestic trophies.
He scored 33 goals and set up 15 more from 49 games.
Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, Lewandowski insisted that it would depend on a lot of factors.
“He has a chance, of course, but there are other things that are very important about the Ballon d’Or,”; he said as quoted by Goal.
“It depends on the rules they have this year. Every year, you have different rules. It depends on who they want and what the rules are this season.”;
He added: “In the end you’re not sure what the important rules are this season.”;
Dembélé left the Catalan side for PSG in the summer of 2023.
