The Office for Product Safety and Standards have urged users to stop using the product immediately, and keep away from children.
If the sand is still in its packaging, it must be placed in a heavy-duty plastic bag then double taped securely – label the package clearly and keep out of the reach of children.
When the sand has been opened and used, the site should be cleaned using wet clothes to avoid generating dust, wearing gloves and a mask.
The can be returned to store it was purchased from for a full refund, and if this is not possible, the local authority can be contacted for how to dispose of asbestos safely.
Asbestos has been a banned substance in the UK, known for causing various lung-related cancers even after low levels of exposure.
In May, two in North Tyneside shut as a precautionary measure following fears that the sand in play areas had been contaminated.
Over the past sixth months, 128 items have been recalled by the OPSS for containing trace amounts of asbestos.
The sand products in question are primarily manufactured in China, despite it being illegal to supply, import and use across the UK.
