Using social listening platform Brandwatch, the study by British Gambler assessed how supporters are viewed off the pitch – and came out on top for all the wrong reasons.

The North London club recorded a 43 per cent negative sentiment rating, the joint-highest in the division.

surprisingly matched that figure, with both sets of supporters attracting the largest proportion of online criticism.

Arsenal’s ranking comes during a season in which they have established themselves as title favourites, sparking intense debate around refereeing decisions and fan reactions.

The report suggests that the scale of Arsenal’s global following, combined with heated online discourse, has magnified scrutiny of their supporters.

The two Merseyside clubs were not far behind Arsenal and Forest.

Liverpool recorded 41 per cent negative sentiment, while Everton followed on 40 per cent.

completed the top five with 40 per cent, with recent friction between fans and manager Oliver Glasner potentially contributing to the spike in criticism.

At the other end of the table, supporters were found to be the least disliked in the league.

Just 20 per cent of online mentions about Fulham fans were negative.

(21 per cent) and (23 per cent) also ranked among the least criticised.

Perhaps the biggest surprise was to see the two Manchester clubs 14th and 15th, with United on 26 per cent and City on 25 per cent.

Spokesperson for British Gambler , Alex Kostin, said: “ fan culture doesn’t stop at the final whistle anymore, it plays out 24 hours a day online – so we’ve dived into the social media metrics to find out which clubs’ fanbase are the most disliked off the pitch.

“Arsenal topping the table reflects just how intense the discourse around them has been this season.

“When you combine a title race, refereeing debates and one of the largest fanbases in the sport, every moment is magnified. The same applies to clubs like Nottingham Forest and Liverpool, with controversy and expectation naturally fuelling negative sentiment.

“Interestingly, some of the league’s most successful clubs this season – namely or Aston Villa – recorded comparatively lower levels of negative sentiment toward their supporters.

“Our data therefore suggests that the clubs driving the biggest online conversations are often the ones attracting the strongest negative reactions.”

The study highlights how modern football rivalries are no longer confined to the stands, with social media now the new battleground for fan culture.
