Hugh Brasher, chief executive of Marathon Events, expects the change to result in over £150 million being raised for charities, whilst also providing a £400 million boost to the .

He said: “The 2027 London Marathon double is our most ambitious evolution to date – a once-in-a-generation one-time-only reimagining of what a marathon and city-wide celebration of activity can be.

“We believe that more than £150m can be raised for good causes and the UK economy will have a £400m social and economic benefit.”

This year’s event saw a record 59,830 finishers and went down as the biggest annual one-day event in the world, with over £90m raised for .

But those records are set to be smashed by its successor, mainly because the participants are set to double in number.

How do I apply for the London Marathon 2027?

Securing a spot on the start line for the London Marathon is famously difficult, even with the chances doubling for next year’s event.

Many charities offer guaranteed entry places to those who promise to raise a minimum amount of sponsorship in exchange for the spot – this number usually amounts to around £2,500.

To apply this way, you can either head to the official London Marathon website or go directly to the charity of your choice, where they may still be actively accepting applications.

A final process of applying is the “Good for Age” or championship entry methods that require a specific qualifying time based on age and gender.
