MICHAEL CARRICK was relaxing and watching from a beach in Barbados the last time Manchester United faced Leeds.
Even he did not imagine he would soon get the call from his old club to take over at .

It was at ex-boss ’s post-match press conference after a 1-1 draw at Elland Road in January when he effectively engineered his own sacking by unloading on director of Jason Wilcox.
Amorim pointed out that his contract had 18 months left to run — but he did not last 18 more hours.
And while it spelt the end for the Portuguese, tonight’s reverse fixture comes at what still feels like the start of ’s reign.
He recalled: “I watched it, yeah. I obviously watched the games and supported from afar.
“But there wasn’t really any sign of (United contacting him) at that stage.
“So I was supporting from afar and enjoying time with the family.
“It can change quick, that’s just the way the game goes.
“You can be in it or you can be out, or results can go one way, can go the other way, and if players are fit and in form then the game flips.”
This fixture at Old Trafford is still such a rarity that Carrick himself never played in it.
During his 2006-2018 Red Devils spell, Carrick played against Leeds as many times as he faced Yeovil, Rostov and Otelul Galati — once.
He was also left on the bench when Leeds famously knocked United out of the at Old Trafford in 2010 while in .
His sole appearance against the giants was in the at Elland Road in 2011.
The visit of will mark his first Prem encounter with them since his days in 2003.
Carrick said: “The rivalry between these clubs is well known and, even though I only played in the fixture once, I know it guarantees a proper atmosphere.
“A spring evening, at a packed Old Trafford, with the crowd right behind us — this is the kind of game anyone would love to play in.”
At Carrington on Saturday, he explained: “I’ve not really taken part in the fixture an awful lot but have I watched it over the years and to be involved in it now is pretty special.”
Monday’s clash is the first of seven Prem games remaining for United, four at home and three away.

When they last qualified for the in 2023, they did so with a game to spare but third place was not secured until the final day.
Emulating ’s first season would be a strong statement from Carrick after United’s worst campaign in 51 years last season.
It would be anti-climactic if United were to now fall to fourth or fifth.
Either position would still ensure the Champions League anthem reverberates around Old Trafford next season.
If United somehow dropped out of the top five spots it would have to kibosh Carrick’s chances of keeping the job beyond the end of the term.
When it was suggested it would be a “failure” for United to come sixth, Carrick replied: “Strong word that. We take where we are.
“We know as a club we want to be challenging right at the top. There’s no getting away from that.
“But I think there’s steps in being realistic as well and talking about where we came in and where we are now, just keep building on that.
“I wouldn’t accept (coming sixth), no. But it’s not so much accepting it, it’s about trying to finish as high as you possibly can.”
