The spokesperson for Uche Nnaji, Nigeria's Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Robert Ngwu, has accused the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) of manipulating and tampering with the minister's academic records.
Ngwu made these claims on Tuesday during an interview on 'The Morning Brief,' a program on Channels Television.
He further alleged that the UNN was engaging in political maneuvers concerning his principal's academic history.
“He did not request the institution to refrain from accessing his academic records. He stated that they should not alter or manipulate the information, especially since there were instances online where personal student files were disclosed. This indicates that someone is intentionally responsible for this,” he explained.
“We have credible information suggesting that manipulations are occurring. The minister has sought court protection and requested that his transcript be released.”
“Currently, the Acting Vice Chancellor is a registered member of the PDP. Normally, he should not hold the position of Vice Chancellor. Additionally, there is a Vice Chancellor who has been politically active for decades. The minister is understandably concerned due to the intersection of law and politics, which can be quite complex,” he stated.
“In Enugu, the PDP has maintained power for the past 26 years by avoiding competition during elections, targeting anyone who poses a challenge, discrediting them, and ensuring they have no party to run against,” he continued.
“Thus, the main issue is for the university to cease tampering with and manipulating his academic records. Essentially, it is about releasing his transcript. In May, he applied for his transcript and made the necessary payment, but it has yet to be released,” he added.
Ngwu mentioned that during the recent court session on Monday, Nnaji had sought the court's protection on various requests.
This allegation arises as Nnaji faces accusations of certificate forgery in 2023 following his political appointment.
The Minister, currently involved in a legal case regarding this matter, informed Justice Hauwa Yilwa of the Federal High Court on Monday that the institution was withholding his academic transcript.
Nnaji asserted that after earning a BSc. degree in Microbiology/Biochemistry with second-class honors (lower division) in 1985, the university has no justification for retaining his academic accolades.
