The Alaafin of Oyo’s Palace has rejected claims by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, that he consulted the Alaafin, the Olubadan of Ibadanland and the Soun of Ogbomoso on the issue of rotating the chairmanship of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs.

In a statement dated January 15, 2026, the palace described the governor’s claim as inaccurate, insisting that no such meeting ever occurred.

The statement was signed by the Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, Bode Durojaiye.

According to the palace, at no point did the Alaafin, Oba Engineer Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, meet with the governor or the other traditional rulers mentioned regarding the matter.

It also dismissed reports suggesting that the Alaafin supported the proposal for a rotational chairmanship.

“The Alaafin neither met with the governor nor endorsed rotational leadership of the council,” the statement said.

The palace further explained that the Alaafin’s position had already been formally communicated to the state government through a memo submitted by the Oyo Council of Elders, which reflects the collective stance of stakeholders in Oyo.

It emphasized that the memo remains the official position of the Alaafin and the Oyo community on the leadership structure of the State Council of Obas and Chiefs.
