The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has apprehended Uwem Umana, a leader of a masquerade cultural group, along with one other individual, for their alleged involvement in various criminal activities. These activities include unlawful assembly, armed obstruction of a public highway, and extortion.
The Command's Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, revealed this information in a statement issued in Uyo on Saturday. The arrests were made following a distress call received from a concerned citizen (name withheld).
John stated that the masquerade group was accused of assaulting citizens, obstructing a public highway, and extorting money from individuals passing through the area.
She explained, “According to the details from the distress call, the offenders, armed with spear arrows, machetes, sticks, and other weapons, were also physically attacking members of the public, including NYSC members.
“Investigations indicated that the leader of the “Ekpo” masquerade in the village, Uwem Umanah, a 45-year-old male, had permitted group members to don masks and disguise themselves in masquerade costumes in public, despite an existing prohibition on such displays.
“Upon receiving this information, operatives from the Command were promptly dispatched to the scene, leading to the arrest of the alleged mastermind, Uwem Umanah.”
In another related incident, a 34-year-old man named David Michael from Ikot Obong Edong Village was apprehended at Ukana Onuk Village while in possession of complete masquerade costumes, preparing to invade the area.
She concluded by stating that both suspects have been charged in court following a comprehensive investigation into the matter. She emphasized that the police will not tolerate acts of lawlessness, intimidation, or violence under any circumstances, including the unauthorized use of cultural symbols to commit crimes.
“The Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State Command, CP Baba Mohammad Azare fsi, assures the general public of the Command’s steadfast commitment to ensuring public safety and order,” she added.
