A FAMILY has paid a poignant tribute to a "proud army veteran" who passed away after a motorcycle accident in South Tyneside.

The 35-year-old, who had served in Afghanistan, tragically lost his life at the scene.

The accident occurred just before 1:30 PM at the A1290 roundabout, west of Downhill Lane near West Boldon.

Investigations are still ongoing as police work to determine the cause of the crash, which is “yet to be established.”

His family, who are receiving support from officers, shared a heartfelt tribute.

They stated: “Simon was a proud Army veteran who served honorably in The Rifles regiment, completing a tour of duty in Afghanistan.

“His bravery, dedication, and commitment to his country will never be forgotten.

“Outside of his military service, Simon enjoyed life’s simple pleasures, including gaming on his console and spending time with his girlfriend and loved ones.

“His warmth and kindness touched everyone who knew him.

“He will be forever loved and missed by his mother, brother, sister-in-law, niece, grandmother, girlfriend, and his extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins.

“Simon leaves behind a legacy of courage, love, and laughter, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.”

Northumbria police have urged any witnesses to contact them with any information.
