The leadership of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has urged Nigeria’s senior men’s national team to remain composed and focused, avoiding any actions that could jeopardize their chances of winning the continental title.
This advice was conveyed by the national President, Isaiah Benjamin, in a statement issued to members on Wednesday by the Association’s Secretary General, Ambassador Ikenna Okonkwo.
“There is no need for confrontations with teammates, opponents, or match officials. At this point, mental resilience and psychological stability are essential for achieving the team’s objectives,” he stated.
In response to the reported incident involving Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman during the match against Mozambique, the SWAN president called on all stakeholders, including the sports media, to continue their support for the Super Eagles.
He specifically encouraged journalists to concentrate on narratives that positively represent Nigeria, reminding them that the team’s success is a collective achievement for the nation.
“As the Super Eagles win and advance, it is a victory for all Nigerians and for the country as a whole,” he emphasized.
The SWAN president also advised the players to reevaluate their strategies ahead of the quarter-final stage, highlighting that matches will become increasingly challenging as the tournament progresses.
“The competition will undoubtedly change from the quarter-final stage. To become champions, you must be adequately prepared to defeat any opponent, regardless of their strength. The Super Eagles possess abundant talent, but the coaching staff and officials must collaborate and approach the upcoming matches with the right mindset,” he asserted.
Benjamin also encouraged the players to maintain their composure and concentrate on the field, stressing the significance of mental balance and discipline.
He expressed confidence in Nigeria’s senior men’s national team to go the distance and secure the continental title.
According to him, the Super Eagles have become one of the main attractions of the tournament, earning admiration from football fans across Africa and beyond.
“The Super Eagles are now captivating football fans from all over Africa and globally here in Morocco. While watching the Round of 16 match against Mozambique on Monday night, fans from other countries were cheering for Nigeria even louder because of the purposeful football displayed on the pitch,” Benjamin remarked.
He noted that Nigeria’s unbeaten streak since the start of the competition in December is a commendable accomplishment.
